How you respond to situations – whether you laugh or cry – builds a roadway of success or failure. That response adds onto the previous ones and pre-positions your mind for how you will respond again in the future. If you have responded positively two out of the last five times to something, then by responding positively again (in one way or another), you’ll improve your rate to three out of six. That roadway will continue to be built throughout your whole life, whether you realize it, or not.
Here’s a technique to use to develop more happiness in your life: Think about something funny that happened. It can be from yesterday or from years ago. Focus on what happened. Recall the words that were said and what people did. When you start laughing, key in on that emotion and mental feeling. Your perspective will shift from doom and gloom to hope and excitement. It really does work. Suddenly, you’ll see answers and options to things you’ve been trying to solve.
Friends have often said, “None of us get out of this life unscathed.” They’re right. Everyone of us has lived through problems, challenges, and trials. Not one of us who graduates from this life and into heaven gets to go without some sort of growth or experiences that shape us.
But, you and I can determine HOW we are going to grow through the challenges. We can choose to view them as defeat or as stepping stones. Your habit of happiness comes directly from the repeated, purposeful decisions to look junk in the eyes and smile. When you see around the issue and realize the good aspects of the present moment, you’ll understand how to constantly live in that realm of a habit of happiness.
No, don’t ignore your problems or live with rose-colored glasses. Instead, realize that you are part of this world, you will get scathed at some point, and that your scars will heal. Throughout each of the challenges you face, today, remember that they won’t last forever.
Just like seasons of weather or seasons on the calendar change “just like clockwork”, you, too, will see brighter days. Make today the day you purposefully develop your habit of happiness.
