As A Parent Of A High School Student, I Fear Failure

Angie Towery
Staff Writer

I come from a diverse family, some who could not read and none who attended college. I was the first member of my family to receive a high school diploma.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying my family failed me -my profession was achieved through a trade school. Although I am happy with my career, I may have pursued a different path had I had "someone" tell me I could do it and explained that even though my financial background wasn't substantially secure that there were other avenues to pursue so that I could afford college.

As like any other involved parent, I want more for my kid. I want him to be aware of all the opportunities available to him. It's hard when you are gathering information to help steer a student down different pathways when you have never ventured the journey.

I am aware the schools have multiple counselors and curriculum nights are offered to students and parents but not all of us speak the same language. I hear some speeches and I simply think, I have no idea. If you have ever thought you are completely lost when listening to school talks, you are not alone.

Luckily for me, I am pretty absorbent when it comes to listening to things I have interest in, I may have to go home and ask my best friend, Google, to bridge the gap in the words and my comprehension, but there are things I know I do not know. I fear I will fail my kid, not because I don't encourage him but because of my lack of knowledge, where do you look, who do you ask, how do you move forward, and when is the right time? These are things I want to learn so I can be more confident when I am by my son's side as he is trying to fulfill his dream of attending Duke University.

Even though we may feel incompetent to ask simple questions in crowds, we must remember, we all do not grasp things the same, some things need to be watered down to bridge the gaps in language barriers. Perhaps there is a getting your child to college for dummies book. If so, I will admit I am a dummy.

I know someday when my kid is the first in my family to attend college, I will never forget how lost I felt when I was trying to find my way so I could help him find his.

Good luck students on this upcoming school year. Always remember, you can do anything if you believe in yourself!
