Mischief At The Air Force Base

Paulette Ballard
Guest Columnist

In 1986 I was a freshman in college. My dad was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo. I had decided to take a drive with my best friend and we ended up at the Air Force Academy about 11:30 p.m.

When we arrived we saw an abundance of traffic cones placed in strategic places. We decided to steal them and put them in the trunk of my car. We took about 35 cones and stacked them as best we could in my trunk.

The next day my father, who was a Colonel at Peterson Air Force Base and worked in logistics, received a call asking him if he was aware of the missing traffic cones. During dinner that evening, my father had made dinner conversation for a while and then mentioned the missing cones. Being the wonderful daughter I am, I did not fess up. I was not willing to take the wrap for what I considered to be just a little joke. However, he did scare the living daylights out of me.

About 11:30 the following evening, my friend and I decided we had better return the traffic cones. However, we didn’t replace them the way we found them. We just stacked the cones in a pyramid and drove rapidly away, praying to God that we didn’t get stopped by the Military Police.  In 1986 there were no cameras around the entrance to the Air Force Base. If I had done that today, we would have been toast.
