Do We Pay For Customer Service

Angie Towery
Staff Writer

In my opinion, customer service should go hand-in-hand with humanity. Nothing infuriates me more than to spend my earned dollars and be served rudeness and ungratefulness.

I'm not really sure at what era customer service died but I hope to see it revived in the near future.

How can customer service be such an unachievable skill? I realize there are individuals who aren't cut from a cloth to deal with the general public but do today's employers fail to see the lack of qualities or do they fail to care?

A simple, "Thank you", pleasant body language and refrained complaints shouldn't be so hard to entice the people who keep your job a float. What's even sadder is that most of us come to accept that 'it's today's kids', well, I disagree.

Personally, I cannot pinpoint an age with either delightful or ugly conduct. Although we don't have to be on the receiving end of unattractive behavior, sadly -convenience usually wins.

Though I completely agree that no one should have to endure rude customer service, let me speak from the other side of the table (so to speak). I am in sales - deal with the buying public every day. And I can assure you there are just as many rude and ungrateful customers as there are sales people. I am required to tolerate their bad behavior because in my industry "the customer is always right". But there are days - plenty of days - that the customer takes full advantage of my politeness, kindness and respect. To the point that I could care less if they buy anything from me. So the message should be to everyone - be kind! No matter if you are the receiver of customer service or the giver of customer service - be kind! And this applies to ALL age categories - not just "those kids today". Adults can be just as bad. Everything moves as such a fast pace these days. Just a simple smile, thank you or word of encouragement can go a long way in making someone's day much better. Just be kind!
