Where Do You Want To Go?

Marty Reep, Author
Speaker, Forward-Thinker

Where do you want to go?  Do you know?  Creating goodness in the world, in your own life, and in the lives of others requires direction and an overall purpose.  Leading others and doing worthwhile things is partially about going somewhere, deciding where, and determining why.

Like in this conversation from Lewis Carroll’s story, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland,

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.

"I don't much care where—" said Alice.

"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.

"—so long as I get SOMEWHERE," Alice added as an explanation.

"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

Lots of people walk and walk and walk…and they get to places, but not necessarily to the places they dreamed of, years before.

Aimless walking will just make you tired.  On the other hand, purposeful walking keeps you refreshed and excited.  When you go somewhere intentionally, you wind up meeting lots of interesting, like-minded people along the way.  You’ll also see sights you never imagined, but since you’re heading somewhere on purpose, you’ll appreciate them.

This is sort of like Dr. Seuss’s book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!  In it, he points out that during your lifetime, you’ll go to a lot of places and see a good many things.  If that’s true, then are the places you’re going to “on purpose” or just because you happened to wake up and find yourself there?  One set has a deeper meaning than the other.  One set builds more value in your life than the other.  Which set do you want to experience?  Which set of places will help you be more fulfilled and help get you closer to your big goals?

Have you thought, recently, about where you want to go?  Have you thought about why you want to get there…wherever “there” is?  If you’ll think about the significance of your destinations, you’ll be able to draw deeper value from them.  As that happens, you’ll enjoy life more – and you’ll enjoy the process of it all, more.

So, first, determine your destination – pick where you want to go.  Second, figure out why you want to get there.  Next, map out how you would like to do it.  Some of the roadways you choose will be easy, while others will be difficult.  Some roads may even be closed or come with detours.  Still, mapping it out is much better that wandering aimlessly.  Finally, get going!  Start walking, or keep walking if you’ve already started.  Each day that you make progress is one more that makes you stronger and takes you closer to where you want to be.

We each have a set number of minutes in the day.  We each have a set number of minutes in our lifetimes.  So, for the minutes that you’ve invested in reading this article, I hope that I’ve given you great value in return for that time.  I also pray that I’ve encouraged you to do great things with it!  I hope to see you on the road of life, as we both venture to our respective “there”.
