In Response To City Considering Steps About Disturbances At Street Events

Dear Editor:

I was shocked when I first moved here in 2006 to endure a street preacher approach me at the Post Office, at the Alive after Five event, at the 4th of July Parade, at the Apple Festival, and even on Voting day in front of the Citizens Center. They caused me to feel sick, angry, and forced me to get away from them. It prevented me from attending the events for several years.

I started going back to events because I was a parks and recreation professional and I wanted to see the people who lived in Lincolnton and how the people behaved, and also how the city presents their events. I wanted to take my grandchildren with me.

This year I saw the obnoxious men preaching in my face, the three vehicles decorated in outrageous, never appropriate anywhere pictures of miscarried babies, naked women, racial slurs, and images of everything that is offensive to me. These acts should be illegal.

Because of it, I do not want to bring my grandchildren, or visitors, to the events held in Lincolnton. It is embarrassing for adults and dangerous for children.

I surely hope the city and/or county will pass an ordinance against it. Also I want assurance that the police will take action when it is reported by citizens.

Thank you for allowing me to comment.
