Puppy Guards Newborn Kittens

Paulette Ballard
Guest Columnist

Sophie was a cat sitting alone in a field when I first saw her. She was sitting on the ground and a large Doberman was right in her face growling at her. Sophie didn’t flinch at all; she just sat there. I don’t know if she was too scared to move or just not afraid of the big dog. However, I was worried about her and I brought her home.

The first night she spent with us I woke up feeling like I couldn’t breathe. I raised up in bed and found that Sophie was making herself comfortable sleeping on my back. We didn’t know she was going to have kittens, but four weeks later she delivered a litter of four tiny babies.

We had a very small dog and she took on the mommy responsibilities and guarded the kittens as though they were her babies. It was so cute to watch the mama cat go walking around the house and the puppy crawl in the bed with the kittens and surround them with her body. I actually think the puppy thought they were her babies to care for.
