Amos & The Gate
Written in 2011

Judge Rembert
Guest Columnist

Amos and Nell had a system…
For most anything…
They had been married for many years…
They liked their system…
The system made life simpler…
Most of the time…
However not this day…

This was the gate system…
And it worked…
When they were going out of the yard in the car…
Amos got the car out of the garage…
Pulled the car to the back door…
Nell got in and rode to the gate…

ELBA 2017 Tree Lighting Christmas Parade

At the gate Nell got out…
Opened the gate and Amos…
Pulled the car through the gate…
Nell closed the gate and got in the car…
And they left… simple…

But this day they had had words…
They were mad…
But, they were using the system…
So Nell got out of the car…
Did her duty but…
As she was walking to her door…
She noticed the back door was ajar…
Do she opened it and slammed it shut…

Amos heard it and said to himself…
Well if she does not want to ride up here with me, fine…
And he drove off…
Leaving Nell standing in the driveway…

Now down the road Amos asked Nell a question…
She did not answer…
What was wrong with her…
When she did not answer the next question…
Amos stopped the car… raised up…
Looked over the seat and discovered…
To his surprise, there was no Nell…

Quickly he turned the car around…
Returning to the yard…
He found Nell sitting on the front porch...
They both laughed out loud…

They got in the car and went to town…
They forgot all about why…
They were mad in the first place…
Life is good and love makes it better…

---More About Judge Rembert: WWII made Judge an only child when her half-brother was killed in the war. She lived in a tiny town in South Carolina until she was eight and her Mother went to work. She was sent to a boarding school in Belmont, N.C. From that time on she has lived back and forth in the two Carolinas. They are both home. She was born dyslexic and did not know what the problem was or that it had a name until she was about 45. She was unable to spell so she never put words on paper until she was 65 and had a computer with spell check. She comes from a long line of story tellers and a Mother that taught her much by telling stories. Stories about people and how they faced life and how they dealt with problems. If you read what she writes you may hear her Mother and her Grandmother talking to her. She is thrilled to know that anyone reads her words and finds them interesting. Oh, she is 75 now and makes her home in Aiken, S.C. If you like Judge’s writings or would like to comment on them let her know by emailing judgerembert@bellsouth.net.
