GASTON COUNTY, N.C. - He is the “Proudest Kid in Gaston County”!

He’s Brayden Moss. And the Cherryville-area boy recently won the essay contest of the same name, according to Donna Lockett, executive director of Gaston Together, the contest’s sponsor. As the 2017 winner of the essay contest, Moss and his family recently travelled to Raleigh, where they toured the Capitol and met State Sen. Kathy Harrington.

As Lockett explained, the “Proudest Kid in Gaston County” essay contest was developed by Gaston Together in partnership with the Gaston County Schools. The winner receives a framed certificate and money towards a trip to Raleigh to meet with Gaston County’s state legislative delegation. The original sponsor of the contest was the Gaston County Education Foundation.

Moss is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Moss and a student at Tryon Elementary School in Bessemer City. His teacher was Katherine Herman. According to young master Moss, he and his classmates saw and learned a lot of things on the “Pride in Gaston” Traveling Tour, and he loved it, as Lockett noted.

“Community pride is the heart of a vibrant community,” she said. “The essay contest is part of Gaston Together’s community pride-building program for third graders, which also includes the companion program, the ‘Pride in Gaston Traveling Tour’ field trip. Open to public and private school students, both programs are directly focused on Gaston Together’s effort to build a foundation of community pride in our young children, and it is a vital component of enhancing community vitality. Community pride establishes a sense of belonging, which can ultimately retain these young students as productive adults in our community in years to come. While we enjoy many opportunities in our county to foster community pride for the adult population, there remains a need for specific efforts to build community pride in our future: our children.”
