LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Crystal Beam is an Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) teacher and 5th grade English Language Arts teacher for Lincoln County Schools. Crystal has worked at Rock Springs Elementary School for 10 years. She grew up in Shelby attending Cleveland County Schools.

Rock Springs is like an extended family for Crystal. She explains that it is a great work environment because everyone works together as a team. She enjoys working with all the different grade levels as the AIG teacher and loves teaching Language Arts.

Crystal hopes that her students will always persevere. She says, “at times students often stop trying before they should and I tell them to keep working through whatever problem they are faced with, both inside and outside of school”. According to Crystal, perseverance is one of the most valuable character traits to have.

She also wants student in Lincoln County to know how lucky they are to attend school in a county where the student is the main focus. She believes that the school system does a great job at always keeping the students’ best interest in mind.

Crystal often tells others that LCS is a great place to work and for students to attend school. As an employee for the school system, Crystal explains that “her opinions are valued and appreciated.” She encourages anyone interested in a career in education to consider working for Lincoln County Schools.

Crystal was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and was selected as Rock Springs Teacher of the Year in 2012. She graduated from UNCC with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and with a Master’s degree in Gifted Education. She is getting married this summer to Jonathan Ryczek.

Crystal extends her work with children beyond her classroom as a tutor and babysitter. She also loves taking care of her puppy, Miller. She has recently read Todd Stanley’s Project Based Learning for Gifted Students.

The Academically and Intellectually Gifted program for Lincoln County Schools is thriving based on the hard work of AIG teachers, like Crystal. As a result, students have the opportunity to experience an advanced curriculum at an early age and then progress into Advanced Placement coursework at the high school level. Lincoln County Schools, with input from its teachers and parents, continues to expand opportunities for AIG students and maintain an updated AIG plan.
