A charge of child abduction has been dropped against a Lincoln County grandmother who fled Monday with her eight-month-old granddaughter.

On Tuesday (June 12th),  a Lincoln County District Court judge not only dropped the child abduction charge but Shelley Lovin Heafner, 62, of Buffalo Shoals Road, was also granted an emergency custody order to keep the child.

Ms. Heafner,  who had been babysitting the child since Wednesday of last week,  left before the child's mother arrived to pick her up. Rebecca Stanley told Ms. Heafner she was bringing the child’s father, who was recently released from jail, with her to pick up the child. The grandmother refused to return the child and left the scene.

Charges were filed and before running the article about the alleged abduction, the Lincoln Herald talked with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and they confirmed they wanted the story run.

The child is safe and still in the care of the grandmother. The Sheriff's Office says no additional charges are expected.
