The Lincolnton Business and Professional Women's Club hosted a dinner Monday evening (Oct. 16th) to honor all of the women previously named Lincoln County Woman of the Year.

The event was held at the Lincoln Cultural Center and catered by the Home Place restaurant. The theme was "Shine Like a Diamond" as the Lincolnton BPW celebrates its 60th Anniversary as an organized club and also selects the 60th Lincoln County Woman of the Year.

Speaker for the evening was the current Woman of the Year, Marissa Smith. A retired math teacher, Marissa shared with the group her appreciation for the strong women that influenced her life including her mother and grandmother as well as many community leaders in Lincoln County. Her passion is volunteering. She has volunteered with United Way of Lincoln County for a number of years. She and her husband also work with the Special Forces Charitable Trust soliciting donations of items that are shipped to deployed troops around the world and do volunteer work with their church, Unity Presbyterian.  Marissa has also volunteered with Amy's Closet, the Denver store that supplies clothing to women who are dealing with domestic violence situations.

Of the 59 Lincoln County Women of the Year, 18 were present for the banquet; 25 of those who have been chosen for the honor have passed away. BPW President Victoria Eicholtz reviewed the list of WOY's, recognized those that were present and shared information about some of the ones who have passed on. All, she said, have made a significant impact on the quality of life in Lincoln County and those living are still giving back to their community in one way or another.

One of the more recent winners, Cheryl Burgess told us: "Being a Lincoln County WOY is an awesome recognition by the nominee's peers. WOY's are the work horses of this County and often do their work quietly and without expecting any recognition for what they do. They love this county and their community.  They live, work, shop and play in Lincoln County. They educate their children in Lincoln County. They support Lincoln County non-profit organizations and they support other working women in Lincoln County. BPW is grateful for each of these women for being part of the BPW history as a former Lincoln County WOY."

BPW is currently taking nominations for the 2017 Woman of the Year. If you know of a woman who gives back to her community, serves others without expecting anything in return, or works hard in her profession OR worked hard and is now retired, take a minute to nominate her. Nominations are due by October 31st by email tovlchapman90@gmail.com or by visiting www.bpwlincolnton.org.
