Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives have a man in custody who attempted to purchase an expensive vehicle from an eastern Lincoln County business on October 18, 2017.

A manager with Auto Sports by the Lake/Lake Norman Exotics at 3489 N NC 16 Business Highway, Denver, NC notified Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies yesterday that a fraud suspect using the identity of a Naples, Florida man was on his way to the business to take possession of a 2015 Mercedes Benz G Class valued at $89,987 he was going to buy.

The business discovered the deal to purchase the vehicle was fraud when a Naples, Florida man contacted the business wanting to know why they were checking his credit. That’s when it was determined the attempted purchase was fake. The business went along with the fraud suspect when he showed up for the vehicle but Sheriff’s Sgt. P. McNeill was stationed nearby and entered the store as the man was signing financial documents and placed him in custody.

The information was turned over to Detective Richard Calhoun and all information the individual had, including his driver’s license, was determined to be false. He refused to give officers any information including his name. He was taken before a magistrate and charged with one felony count of fraud and one felony count of attempting to obtaining property by false pretense. He was then placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $250,000 secured bond.

He was also ordered held until a positive identity could be established. A search of various data bases using fingerprints revealed the suspect was William Wilson whose last known address was in Austell, Georgia.
