Sunday Incident Sends One To Hospital

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

A 15-year-old Denver area teen was sent to the hospital Sunday evening after he was grazed by a blast from a gun accidentally fired by a 14-year-old.  The incident happened shortly before 6 PM on Campground Road just northeast of Denver.

Another youth called 9-1-1 and detectives with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said a group of about five teens were playing a game trying to get through the door into the mobile home. The 15-year-old was in the doorway when the 14-year-old  fired a shot from a 12-gauge shotgun. The blast from about three feet away grazed the teen’s chest, went through the wall of the mobile home and into an outbuilding. There were no adults at the residence when the incident occurred.

Lincoln County EMS transported the victim to CHS Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he was treated for his injuries and released to his parents. The detectives talked with three other teens who witnessed the incident. The Juvenile Justice was notified but no charges were filed.

The youth was later released from the hospital.  The identities of the teens were not released.
