LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Susan G. Komen® is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Susan G. Komen® Charlotte’s emphasis is on breast cancer awareness and education, breast health screenings, diagnostics, and treatment support services for uninsured and underinsured women and men.

Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised in the Charlotte region are distributed to fund local community health programs in a 13-county service area. The remaining 25 percent of net funds are invested in the Susan G. Komen® Research Fund managed at the national level. Lincoln County has been fortunate to have been the recipient of Komen Charlotte’s community grant funding of over $300,000 since 2010. On August 15, 2017, Jennifer Sinclair, Lincoln County’s Grant Manager, accepted the 2017-2018 grant award of over $36,000 on behalf of the Lincoln County Health Department.

Funding through the Komen grant provides education, screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and surgeon charges for patients who qualify for these services. The grant is managed at the Lincoln County Health Department and funds are allocated according to patient qualifications. Through partnerships with local providers such as CHS-Lincoln, Charlotte Radiology, CMC Surgery-Lincoln, and Levine Cancer Institute, the health department is able to offer patients the highest level of care in screening and diagnostic services.

All women are at risk for getting breast cancer. Breast cancer is not a cancer that looks pretty in pink and only requires discussion during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Women are empowered by knowing their risk, getting screened, knowing their normal, and making healthy lifestyle choices.

The promise of Susan G. Komen® is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cure. The Lincoln County Health Department is honored to play a role in Komen’s mission.

Contact Jennifer Sinclair at the Lincoln County Health Department at 704-736-8819 for more information regarding outreach and education and/or qualifications to receive services.
