The Lincolnton Wolves, who looked like a different football team than in their first two games, one-sided losses, had a big night last Friday against East Gaston. This Thursday night, they'll visit North Gaston, hoping for their second win. Tyshawn Harris ran for 208 yards and four touchdowns in the win over the Warriors. Terrell McClain completed 6 of 8 passes for 143 yards and a TD. The Wolves defense intercepted five East Gaston passes as LHS dominated, running up 51 points before allowing the Warriors a pair of late scores.

North Gaston beat East Lincoln last Friday, but the Wildcats lost to East Gaston in their first game of the year and like the Wolves are 1-2 coming into this game.

For his performance, Harris was named the First Federal Savings Bank Player of the Week. The award was presented Tuesday by Demery Brewer of First Federal and Tim Johnson and Ken Link, who do a 30-minute preview of Lincoln County high school football every Friday evening 6:30 - 7:00 PM on WLON Radio (1050 AM).

JV games this Thursday include East Gaston at East Lincoln, West Lincoln at East Burke and Mountain Island Charter at Cherryville.

The East Lincoln varsity team will still be looking for its first win of the season when the Mustangs travel to East Gaston Friday night. East Lincoln's big problem has been offense--or the lack of it.  Against North Gaston, they scored on their first possession, but then failed to make a TD on another opportunity, turning the ball over on downs after making it to the Wildcats' one-yard line. North Gaston then mounted a 99-yard drive and the Mustangs didn't threaten again.

West Lincoln suffered its first defeat of the year last week, losing the "Battle of Hog Hill" to Fred T. Foard. This week, the Rebels travel to Connelly Springs to play East Burke, a team that is now 0-4 and is giving up an average of 44 points per game. Brendon Ikard just missed the century mark, rushing for 98 yards and a TD last week after putting up 119 yards and a touchdown against Cherryville the previous week. They may be playing on the road, but West Lincoln will be heavily favored to win this one.

North Lincoln is exactly the opposite of East Lincoln. While the Mustangs are having problems on offense, the Knights are scoring plenty of points--but their defense is losing ball games. After beating the Carolina Wildcats in their first game, they've given up 40 points in each of the last two games.

Reed McRorie completed 17 of 32 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns, but had two interceptions against a strong Alexander Central team last Friday. North Lincoln's offense had 348 total yards and 19 first downs, but the Knights couldn't stop the Cougars on defense.

This week, North will travel to Bessemer City to play an undefeated Yellow Jackets team. Their big challenge will be to stop sophomore running back Jarkevious Love, who has averaged over a hundred yards a game (354 yards total in three games and six touchdowns).

Maiden celebrated the naming of their field for former coach Tom Brown in improving to 4-0 with a win over St. Stephens last week. Quarterback Keygan Mayfield ran for 161 yards on 20 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns last Friday in the win over St. Stephens. In the opening week game, he passed for a couple of touchdowns and ran for a couple more as the Blue Devils beat Fred T. Foard. He also passed for two TDs in the Maiden win over Bunker Hill. The Blue Devils have this week off before playing at home against Bandys next Friday (Sept. 22nd).

Cherryville, now 2-2, also has this week off. The Ironmen will host Thomas Jefferson Academy (4-0) next Friday at Rudisill Stadium.

After beating Crest last week and Burns the week before, the Shelby Golden Lions will try to make it a clean sweep of Cleveland County opponents when they play at Kings Mountain this week. Both teams are undefeated; Shelby has won four games, the Mountaineers three. Shelby had to work hard for the win last week. They fell behind 14-10, then got two safeties and a late touchdown to win over the Chargers.

South Point's Red Raiders are 4-0 going into this Friday's home game against Stuart Cramer. Fans are already talking about the "game of the year"--the last game of the season when Shelby plays at South Point in what many believe will be the championship game of the Southwestern 2A Conference.
