Lawrence Crews Carter
December 26, 1955 - October 19, 2017

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Mr. Lawrence Crews Carter, age 61, of Lincolnton transitioned on Thursday, October 19, 2017 in Charlotte, N.C.

He was born in Halifax County, Va. on December 26, 1955 to the late Otis James Carter and Essie Crews Carter. Lawrence graduated from Halifax County High School. He was a successful basketball player throughout middle and high school which allowed him to attend college on a basketball scholarship. He graduated from Lees-McRae and furthered his education at Belmont-Abbey College. He was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church and attended Poplar Springs A.M.E. Zion Church. Carter worked for Opex Corporation as a Service Technician for the last 20 years.

He was also a registered basketball Official for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Carter was an influential person in the community who had a huge impact on the lives of so many. He was known for his love of the game of basketball and taught so many young children the fundamentals of basketball at his camps at the Lincolnton Recreation Center. In 2008, he was inducted into the Halifax County-South Boston Sports Hall of Fame.

Survivors are his wife, Danita Lutz Carter; a son, Lorenzo Tate Carter of Renton, Washington; a daughter and son-in-law Sade Carter (Darrius) Thompson of Midlothianva, Va.; his grandson, Tristan Ernest Thompson; one brother, Otis James (Charlotte) Carter Jr. of Halifax, Va.; two sisters, Linda Carter of Charlotte, N.C., and Marian (Ellis) Stamps of Danville, Va.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Covenant Church, Lincolnton N.C. with burial to follow in Poplar Springs A.M.E Zion Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

Ebony & White’s Funeral Service of Lincolnton, N.C. is serving the Carter family.
