I Am A Worry Wart
Ken Ebright

“Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”  ---Philippians 4:6-7 (NCV)

I knew I was getting a speeding ticket when the police officer asked, “Do you know how fast you were going?” I had been traveling between Minneapolis and Wilber, Nebraska concerned about how long it would take to make the trip. I made a few more stops than anticipated but still made it there before 9 p.m.

That wasn’t the only thing I was worried about on this trip. I worried about getting the groceries before the stores closed on Christmas Eve. My sister could tell I was stressed, and that made her stressed, but we were finished way before the stores closed.

I also worried about the weather. The forecast had changed on a dime, and Northern Iowa was predicted to get two to four inches of snow. As it turned out, it was no big deal driving through Iowa.

So why do I worry? I don’t know. I had been ignoring my worry problem, but the ticket brought the problem home to me. Worries are a part of life in a sin-sick world. There is always something I can worry about if I choose, but it never helps.

The question is, what does God tell me will help? He tells me to pray, ask and trust Him for what I need instead. This can be hard for me since I tend to think I can do everything in my own strength. But if I really want His peace, I need to trust and apply His advice.

---Ken Ebright is a native Minnesotan and loves to sing and can play the keyboard. He grew up in church and accepted Jesus in high school. A Mother of a friend of his suggested that he write a book about his life which had been difficult up until that point. He has had hardships since and has been in groups like Alateen where he learned that he was not the only one that had gone through hard times. Now he wants to use those hard times and hopefully encourage people. His testimony "My/911" is in the book "Trials and Triumph" that is being published by Faithwriters.
