First...

Dr. Stanley Spence, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Lincolnton, N.C.

One of the most difficult life lessons to learn is not to generalize a onetime experience as always true. An example of this is finding a little money on the ground. Following the result of a onetime experience as always true, you might walk with your eyes stuck to the ground searching for money and get a hunched over back for your trouble.

You might place a bet on some event and win and possibly lose your savings trying to repeat the same result you had in the beginning. Drug addictions are created in the same way. A Mother’s advice to her children is simple enough; no one ever became an alcoholic who refrained from taking the first drink. It is true; and yet, where would we be in this world if someone had not taken a chance trying something new.

There was the first trip to the moon; the first astronaut, the first diver, the first artist, the first cancer treatment, the first penicillin, the first computer, the first indoor plumbing which by invention allowed for the first buildings over four stories high and the list could go on and on. Our lives are enriched because of first tries.

Spiritually speaking, we are new creatures in God when we utter that first prayer asking Jesus into our hearts. There is always a first which is the point of this summary, and there are good firsts and bad firsts. How does one know when the things one is encountering for the first time will lead to a good or a bad outcome? Sometimes one doesn't know for sure until after taking that first step.

Your first encounter with Jesus will have an uplifting result. It may be the realization of ‘why I did not realize this sooner?’

Suffice it to say, seeking out the good firsts as opposed to the bad firsts is a key to embracing the great human results that lie within us all. The best way I can envision this is by trusting God as you face each day. The presence of the Holy Spirit can help us as we make challenging choices about ‘firsts.’ Let your life first reflect holiness and you will escape the snares of life that lie in wait for those who are careless about their ‘first’ tries in everything.
