LINCOLNTON, N.C.––At Boger City United Methodist, the women are really cookin’!

Yes, nothing says down-home like the good, old-fashioned cooking of church ladies and their venerable recipes, often passed down for generations. And at Boger City Methodist, the Methodist Women are right now engaged in a cake bake-off. There’s a cookbook tie-in, too, so the results are sure to be delicious.

Jan Oathout and Sandy Tomlinson, respectively the president and first vice president of the Boger City United Methodist Women recently talked about the ongoing efforts involved in this church-sponsored event. Plans are to make it an annual one.

Oathout explained that the church is calling all local cake-bakers to participate in the cake bake-off. The purpose is to raise funds for humanitarian efforts in Lincoln County, as she said Monday.

“We hope to make money for various local missions that everybody can relate to,” Oathout said, citing the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Lincoln County, the Hesed House of Hope, Christian Ministry of Lincoln County and help for local cancer patients on chemotherapy.

She added that cakes should be delivered on Saturday, Nov. 4, 9:30-10 a.m., in the church’s fellowship hall at 2320 E. Main St. in Lincolnton. The $3 recipe books and the cakes will be sold and prizes awarded, 1:30-3 p.m. Cakes will be sold by the slice for a $1 or by the portion. A $5 entry fee will be collected for each cake delivered for the bake-off.

Prizes for both youth and adult bakers are $50 for first place, $25 for second and $15 for third. Winners will also receive first, second and third-place ribbons.

All bakers should submit their recipes with their names, addresses and telephone and e-mail contact information to the church by Oct. 14.

Send them to: Boger City Methodist, 2320 E. Main St., Lincolnton, N.C. 28092.Or you can e-mail the same details to admin@bogercitymethodist.org.
