Christian Ministry Gears Up For Hunger Walk
Annual event is Oct. 22

LINCOLNTON, N.C.––Oct. 22, you can put your feet where your heart is.

How? By walking to help end hunger. That Sunday, you can take part in the annual Hunger Walk and make a difference for the hungry, according to Mitzi Williams. The executive director of Christian Ministry of Lincoln County, Williams said Friday that the Hunger Walk is a worthy cause and always a big event.

“Please come stroll around Lincolnton and help the hungry!” she said. “Start collecting money now! Let people know you are going to support the ministry. If needed, forms and envelopes to track and keep your donations are available at the ministry.

“For the past several years, the funds raised have been used to purchase meals for recipients on the LINC Meals program,” she added, citing the ministry’s meal delivery efforts for the local elderly homebound. “This past year, it paid for 10 people who cannot prepare a hot meal by themselves and do not have anyone to do it for them. These are people who cannot afford to pay the $4.20 per meal.”

Williams noted that the Hunger Walk is easily accessible for walkers of all abilities.

“Do you have a Sunday afternoon free?” she rhetorically asked. “Can you take a leisurely walk around Main Street? It doesn’t matter how far you walk. Can you ask your family, friends and neighbors for a couple of dollars to help feed people? Also, don’t forget that the Hunger Walk carnival will be back with more games and fun, and those tasty hotdogs and fixings will be there too!”

The carnival starts at 1:30 p.m. that Sunday, Oct. 22, and the walk registration is at 2:30 p.m. The walk itself follows at 3 p.m.

“This is all it takes to help fight hunger in our community!” said Williams.

Thanks to golfers

And in other news, Williams expressed her gratitude to the local golfers who took part in the recent golf tournament that benefitted Christian Ministry.

“Thank you to all our golfers and hole sponsors,” she said. “Christian Ministry had another successful golf event. Thank you to all of those who helped volunteer and the many of those who gave generously to our ministry!”

Williams continued that the ministry is out of blankets.

“Wal-Mart has new blankets for $5,” she said. “But we will take used blankets that are in good condition.”

Williams also released the following schedule for the ministry’s volunteer food-packers from local churches:

  • Ivey Memorial, Oct. 2-3;
  • Rhyne Heights Methodist, Oct. 4-6;
  • First Presbyterian of Lincolnton, Oct. 9-13;
  • David Memorial Baptist, Oct. 16-17;
  • Trinity Lutheran, Oct. 18-20;
  • Greater Moore’s Chapel, Oct. 23-25;
  • Reep’s Grove Methodist, Oct. 26-27;
