Why?

Dr. Stanley Spence, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Lincolnton, N.C.

Fifty-nine dead, over 500 injured...the biggest mass shooting in US history--you've no doubt seen, heard or read the story from multiple sources.  Latest figures from police say at least 59 people were killed and 527 were injured after a gunman opened fire Sunday night (Oct. 1st) at a country music festival opposite the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Some of the victims were young, others were older.  Perhaps the best story about the multiple victims of this senseless act was from the LA Times. CLICK HERE to read it.

Across the country, the event has many asking the question--WHY?

Dr. Stanley Spence, pastor of First Baptist Church of Lincolnton, shared the following in an email to members of his church.  We thought it worth sharing with our readers.

Estate Jewelers - Christmas 2017

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting in Las Vegas I’d like to share a thought with you.

In Romans 8:28 we read, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

As a pastor, very few occasions rise to the point of immediate response, however, this one does. There will be no satisfying answer coming from the experts as to why a troubled individual would open fire with intent to harm a crowd in a joyous moment of fun. There will be no way to put into perspective such a troubling event as the senseless death of over 50 people and the injuring of over 200. Theologically, it stirs the question, why?

Evil comes in three ways, natural, moral and demonic, according to Dr. Frank Tupper. This falls into the category of demonic evil. Still yet, the verse above promises God’s activity for good is found in the darkness of such an event as this one. Those who threw themselves upon others to protect them; Those who at risk of their own lives stayed in harm’s way to give aid to other victims as they were able; and those who risk their lives breaching the room to stop the gunman from further death and destruction. In the midst of the horror we will hear how brave people stayed in the hardship until help was adequate.

This is tragic. It deserves our prayers for all involved directly and indirectly. Let us lift a prayer for these fellow citizens as they struggle with the events to come.

Almighty God, Be near our fellow citizens who endured this terrible tragedy. Their lives have now been shattered in the peace they enjoyed. Guide them with your love. Support them with your Holy Spirit. Bring individuals into their lives that will sustain them through this terrible event. God, help the experts as they seek understanding to be even more alert in preventing this in the future. Thank you for those who stayed in harm’s way for the securing of those injured and the subduing of the shooter. Sustain them in this hour. In Christ’s Name, Amen.
