Changes

Dr. Stanley Spence, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Lincolnton, N.C.

Moments have the ability to change a life. The moment you were born, your life changed the lives of your parents. The moment you met a wife or husband life changed. The moment you decided on a career your life changed. Certainly, the moment you decided to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior that was a life changing moment as well. Many moments alter the outcomes of our lives.

There are several ways to encounter these moments. One way is proactively seeking to anticipate the moments and work the circumstances to a desired outcome. Another way is to do nothing and expect the outcome to be what it will be. This is called a passive approach. There is one other method of encountering these moments called the reactive approach. When an event happens the individual steps up into active response for accomplishing the best possible desired outcome. There are a variety of variances in between these options.

House of Trophies - Retirement

An individual once asked me “how do you break the patterns of behavior learned from childhood?” The person asking was especially hopeful of breaking out of some bad life patterns of behavior learned as a child. I asked these questions: If your parents had been Christians and raised you differently would you still have this problem? The person nodded yes. Then I asked; if your grandparents had been Christian and raised your parents differently would that have made a difference in the way you were raised? The immediate response was, “Sure, it would!” “How?” I asked. The person proceeded to give me a lengthy explanation of the differences it would have made in the way they were raised.

Then I suggested, “why don’t you be the first in your family to raise up the next generation with that problem solved? If Christ could guide your grandparents through this, then he could guide you through it as well. What difference would it make to your children’s children if you were to stop this problem pattern now? By committing this problem to God and raising your children to know a different way of handling the problem pattern the family course correction can make a huge difference in the generations to come. Start the change right this moment.”

Only time will tell whether it works or not for this friend. Yet the truth is, many problems can be solved if we turn them over to God. Several generations from now will know the blessing of living without the burden of past patterns of sin when we live in such a way as to glorify God today. I think this is what God intended we do for future generations--live for Christ today so that future generations will be free to build on the successes of the past for their futures. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
