Thoughts On Veterans Day

Dr. Stanley Spence, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Lincolnton, N.C.

John 15:13 (KJV) Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Veterans Day is full of memorials to those who have borne the weight of freedom when it required human courage. Standing and dying next to each other is not something we can easily understand. We can see from the story of Jesus the impact death can have on the survivors in the face of premature death.

Those who have stood the trial of war to see their country free are evidence of the love. As we remember our veterans this week we should know the sacrifice they make is for something we hold dear. More important, we would not know freedom apart from the freedom provided by God in the forgiveness of sins.

Humanity knows the trouble of those overtaken by sin and enslaved by its consequences. When you think of veterans, think about the burden they carry for the cause of freedom. Whether the freedom was for many souls or for the nation, it did not come free. The cost is born by the ones who gave everything as well as those who survived and carry the memories of the lost. How valuable it is to honor and offer respect for those who stand in the trouble of the day for the cause of their loved ones. Would you give yourself for another? Our veterans did. I am thankful for them.

We will recognize our veterans in both services on Sunday, November 12th.  Dr. Dixon Free, former pastor of our church, will speak at both the 8:30 and 11 AM services.  We invite you to join us.
