10 Local Girl Scouts Graduate With A Strong Sense Of Self

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts on March 12, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia with 18 little girls. Today Girl Scouts has over 10 million girls and adults all over the world.

Ten Lincoln County Girls that have graduated in 2020 are striving for a strong sense of self as they move out into the world displaying excellent planning skills. They are working toward independence and freedom seeking to make their own decisions and make a difference.

• Caroline Knight graduated from Lincoln Charter School in Denver. She has been there since kindergarten. She will be going to Appalachian State university in the Fall. As of right now she plans on majoring in Social Work and minoring in Criminology and Political Science.
• Brianna McCall of Troop 20107 graduated from East Lincoln High School. Brianna has learned great leadership and problem solving skills while in Girl Scouts. She plans to major in business and become certified in Electrolysis (permanent facial and body hair removal). She ultimately would like to own her own med spa.
• Elizabeth Pruitt is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Cherryville High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was on the school’s tennis team. A member of Girl Scouts for 12 years, from Brownie to Ambassador, she earned her Bronze and Silver stars. Elizabeth will be going to basic training in the Army on June 30.
• Morgan McPeak, a member of Karen Brailey’s Troop 20160 is a 2020 graduate of North Lincoln High School. She has been active in Girl Scouts for 11 years and was presented with her Gold Award on October 9, 2019. Her project was a Lexiled Lending Library for the campers at Sally's Y. Morgan will be attending the United States Naval Academy, reporting in late June 2020.
• Elizabeth Strain is a graduate of Lincoln Charter School in Denver. She has been in Girl Scouts for nine years, earning her Bronze and Silver Awards. She will be attending UNC-Chapel Hill in the Fall. Morgan McPeak and Elizabeth Strain are in the same troop. They noted that their troop participated in every Camporee and Thinking Day, as well as a variety of other events in their Service Unit and Council. They also helped their community over the years, with composting projects, making cards for soldiers, volunteering at Operation Christmas Child and many others. The troop saved their cookie money for several years to help pay for a final trip to Sangam World Centre in India last summer. While there, they met Girl Guides and Scouts from around the world and taught young Indian Girl Guides camp songs. They said their troop took the Girl Scout Promise to heart and truly became sisters to every Girl Scout.
• Kylie Crane plans on finishing up her associates degree at Gaston College in forensic science then transfer to St. Andrews in forensics. She has been a Girl Scout since she was a early cadette and completed her bronze and silver award. Her proudest accomplishment this far is creating a butterfly garden for The Coalition Against Child Abuse for Lincoln County with her troop. She is currently finishing her gold award implementing a reading program with both adults and children involving animals to assist with social emotional support.
• Olivia Wagner, a graduate of North Lincoln High School, is going to go to flight school to become a pilot. During 2019-2020 she has been busy with percussion and was first marimba and the section leader for front ensemble with NLHS band. She was also on an independent percussion team, Revelation, and was set to compete in WGI worlds when it was canceled for COVID19. She was on the Lincoln County Ski Team and got 3rd place in girls HS ski division. Her greatest accomplishment was completing her Girl Scout Silver Project, an outdoor classroom at North Lincoln Middle School with anchored in-ground benches and a white board (with Taylor Ward). Olivia was very happy with Girl Scouts and her troop under Lisa Taylor’s leadership and learned so much; from Camporee activities teaching younger kids to the many countries of the world with Thinking Day.

• Madeline Knight has been a member of girl scouts since Brownies. She is currently finishing her Gold award. Her project was soup pie for Papaws and Babies for Babushkas. She paired two nursing homes with two churches. The churches provided dolls and puppies to the memory care units as doll therapy is important to this population. The churches also will be visiting them on a regular basis. She is Cum Laude honor graduate from Bandy’s High School. She will attend Appalachian State University in the fall where she plans to get a degree in Art Education. She wants to teach high school art when she graduates from college.
