Dear Editor:
A water leak discovered in the early afternoon of Thursday, December 23, pouring from both the base of a tree and the road on Governors Island, sent crews scrambling through the middle of the night to locate the source and repair the leak as well as the road, which had to be dug up.
The tree was also sacrificed before the leak was located and then fixed around 9 p.m. It was in an unused service line coming out of an old water meter box that the tree had literally suffocated, crushed and buried deep under the roots.
Water was then quickly restored while crews cut up the tree, created a new water meter box and for safety, filled in the road with gravel so other crews could patch it the following week.
Many thanks to the Lincoln County public works employees who worked so hard and even dug with their hands around the pipes and tree in the large and very muddy hole on a very chilly night so residents could have water for Christmas.
