"Memorial Day used to be celebrated May 30th every year.  It just so happens it's on May 30th this year, but the Uniform Holiday Act from the 1980s now puts it on the last Monday in May.  For many, it marks the beginning of the summer season, and I'm afraid that the three-day weekend has become more important to many than the solemn occasion Memorial Day was meant to be."  Lincolnton Mayor Pro-Tem Dr. Martin Eaddy traced the history of the observance.  "I never served in the military," Eaddy said, "but I appreciate all those who did, especially those this day is meant to honor, those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.  I hope people will do more than enjoy a cookout.  The purpose of this day is to remember those heroes."

Saturday night, luminaries in the shape of a cross were lighted on the VFW lawn in what has become a Lincolnton Memorial Day tradition.

Another brief ceremony is planned for Monday at noon near the memorial monuments on the east side of the current Lincoln County Courthouse.  Other towns including Stanley also have observances planned.  The North Lincoln High School Band of Knights will be in the Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC.

In years past, the pool at Betty Ross Park has opened on Memorial Day, but this year, it will open the next weekend.  Government offices, banks and the Post Office will be closed Monday.
