Christy Lefevers of Catawba Valley Community College was recently recognized as the Staff Person of the Year.

CVCC’s associate dean for work force connectivity and director of the Catawba Apprenticeship Network (or CAN), Lefevers’s recognition comes from the North Carolina Community College System. According to CVCC, through the years, her previous roles have included accounting instructor, accounting program director and department head of business programs. She is also a licensed certified public accountant.

One staffer a year is chosen out of all 58 community colleges in the system. The selected recipients show “excellent performance and commitment to the community college mission” and exemplify the spirit of their colleges through their work with students and colleagues.

As the associate dean for work force connectivity, Lefevers is very busy. She helps connect students to opportunities beyond the classroom, such as work-based learning, career advising and apprenticeship, where high school and college-level students can earn money and receive hands-on training with local companies whilst enrolled in CVCC degree program, according to Robin Ross, the college’s vice president of talent development.

“We are proud of Christy’s accomplishments and commitment to enhancing the academic experience for all students,” Ross recently said. “Christy has worked tirelessly to create and build relationships through apprenticeships that allow students to connect seamlessly with employers before they graduate. Her work has a positive impact on our students, our college and the community at large by helping students improve their economic mobility. CVCC is extremely proud of Christy and honored to watch her receive the N.C. Community College System Staff Person of the Year Award.”

Lefevers said she was thrilled to have her work recognized at the state level. She attributes her success to the support of her CVCC colleagues.

“Receiving the Staff Person of the Year Award is humbling,” she said, “and my heart is full of gratitude. I think it is important to know that our role is about continuing relationships. Whether we work with our colleagues, business partners or other educational institutions, we work together to accomplish the same core mission: help the student.”
