LINCOLNTON, N.C. - April is School Library Month, a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of School Library Media Coordinators (SLMCs). These dedicated professionals wear many hats, and go above and beyond traditional library duties to support students, teachers, and the entire school community. Lincoln County Schools is fortunate to have 21 school library media coordinators, with one housed at each traditional school.
School Library Media Coordinators advocate for literacy and learning, as well as curate books and digital resources. In addition, they collaborate with teachers to develop lesson plans and promote a love of reading through the Battle of the Books program, author visits, book clubs, and promotions such as Read Across America Week.
In celebration of Read Across America Week, schools across the district found creative ways to inspire students to read. At West Lincoln High School, SLMC Tammy Johnson organized a door decorating contest that allowed teachers to showcase their favorite books. Elementary schools also celebrated Read Across America Week by participating in themed spirit days that encourage reading in fun and engaging ways. Whether dressing as their favorite book character or dressing cozy (cozying up with a book), students enjoyed a week filled with fun activities to promote reading.
Lincoln County Schools is fortunate to partner with the Lincoln County Public Library to bring programs to students. The Public Library sponsored an author visit in December, and another visit is scheduled for late April. In addition, the Public Library offers Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) outreach requests, where Public Library staff come out to schools for parent/teacher nights, open houses, STEM clubs, and staff meetings. The Lincoln County Public Library also assists Lincoln County Schools with academic competitions such as the Spelling Bee and Battle of the Books Competitions.
Over the past several years, the role of the school librarian extends beyond books and reading. SLMCs are tech gurus, problem-solvers, and instructional facilitators at each of their school sites. SLMCs manage all student and staff devices, including Chromebooks, Smart TVs, etc.
This April, we celebrate the multiple roles of our SLMCs. They are educators, technicians, and storytellers.
