LINCOLNTON - Roberta “Bobbie” Jean Crowell, age 92, of Lincolnton, passed away on February 8, 2020 at the Brian Center of Lincolnton.
Her receiving will begin at 11 a.m. on February 13, 2020, at First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton in the fellowship hall, followed by the funeral service at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Tony Matthews officiating. Burial will follow at Hollybrook Cemetery.
Bobbie Jean was born December 29, 1927 in Lincolnton to the late Earl and Rose Hinson Padgett. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings Rose Erleen Padgett, Mary Frances Padgett Phifer, Sara Padgett Porter, Josie Padgett Graves and her husband of 68 years, Charles C. Crowell Jr.
Bobbie Jean was a devoted wife, mother and Nanta. Her family meant more to her than anything. She also cherished her community, church and children. Bobbie Jean loved leading and teaching children as well as adults. She taught Kindergarten at the Episcopal Parish House as the assistant to Ms. Mattie Lou. Later in life, she continued to follow her passion for teaching by helping adults receive their GED and ABE at Gaston College (Lincoln County campus). Bobbie Jean’s door was always open at their home; whether it was for a DAR meeting, FUMC Circle meeting or just a visit from family and friends. She loved nothing more than to have someone in her home, with whom she could feed and have wonderful conversation.
One of her greatest accomplishments was at the age of 64, when she decided to go back to college at Appalachian State University and get her degree in Theatre and Drama. She commuted back and forth between her home in Lincolnton and mountain cabin in Boone, N.C. to achieve her goal of getting her degree and graduated Magna Cum Laude of her class in 1992. This degree allowed her to further her dreams of acting on the stage and getting involved with the theatre department at ASU. In 1991, she had the opportunity to play a lead role in the school’s production of Barefoot in the Park and was the star of the show.
The legacy Bobbie Jean leaves behind is one that will never be forgotten and never duplicated. Her family realizes how incredibly blessed they were to have had her as a sister, aunt, mother and Nanta. Bobbie Jean will be truly missed by all of those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Charles “Todd” Crowell III (Ann) of High Point, N.C.; daughter, Libby Cline (Michael) of Lincolnton; and son, Robert Crowell (special friend, Katherine) of Boone, N.C.; four grandchildren, Charles “Charlie” Crowell IV (Julie) of Columbus, Ohio, Walton Crowell (Anne) of Anchorage, Ak., Micah Exoo (Derek) of Charlotte, N.C., and Dr. Matthew Cline (Meghan) of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Charles Crowell V, Cate Crowell, Bowen Cline, Parker Cline and Maddox Exoo.
