A recent Civitas Institute Poll found Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) significantly leading Republican primary challenger Sandy Smith and former Governor Pat McCrory, who has not filed as a candidate, leading Lt. Gov. Dan Forest for Governor.
Tillis had a margin of 63% to 11% for Smith. 25% of those surveyed said they were undecided.
For the GOP nomination for Governor, McCrory was the choice of 42 percent, with Forest in second place at 31 percent, and Rep. Holly Grange (R-New Hanover) with 3 percent. 25 percent of likely Republican primary voters remained undecided in the gubernatorial race.
Democratic Governor Roy Cooper filed for re-election last week. Early polls give him an edge over either of the top two Republican challengers, but McCrory's figures are closer to Cooper.
For the Democrats, Cal Cunnigham, who lost in the primary to Elaine Marshall in 2010, is by far the favorite of most Democrats to oppose Tillis.
