Joan Manuel Swaney
February 9, 1945 - November 19, 2022

NEWTON, N.C. - Joan Manuel Swaney, 77, of Newton passed away of a sudden illness on November 19, 2022, with her loving husband and daughter by her side.

Joan was born in Statesville on February 9, 1945 to Marguerite and Frank Manuel.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Swaney; daughter, Ronda Swaney; sister, Barbara (Manuel) Harding; sisters-in-law, Vickie Wodarski and Carolyn Swaney.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Marguerite Hewitt Manuel and Frank Manuel.

Joan graduated in 1963 from Bandys High School, where she met the love of her life, Lawrence Swaney. They married at Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church on August 24, 1963. In their young married lives, they lived in Cary and in Colonial Heights, Virginia while her husband was in the service. They ultimately returned to Newton where they made their home and nurtured their family.

Joan worked in the furniture industry for decades as a sewer. She worked for Knitmode and Hickory Hill. Then from 1989 until her retirement in 2016, she worked as plant manager of Larlin Cushion Company, a business she and her husband owned.

Above all, she was a wonderful wife and mother, who loved her family with her whole heart. Alzheimer's faded her memories in the later years of her life, but never faded her beautiful smile or sense of humor. Her love for her fur babies and flower garden shone brightly as well.

There will be no public visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association.

Online condolences may be sent to the Swaney family at www.bennettfuneralservice.com and cards may be sent to their Newton residence. For health reasons, the family respectfully requests no in-person visits to the home.

Bennett Funeral Service of Newton, N.C. is serving the Swaney family.
