Throughout February, the Catawba County Library will be celebrating Black History Month by showcasing four movies that matter and screening them each Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Main Library, 115 W C St., Newton, N.C. 28658.
February 6: The Legend: The Bessie Coleman Story: Tells the story of a young Texas girl who trained to be a pilot in France in the 1920s, earning an international aviator&rsquo s license and becoming the first black person in history to receive a pilot&rsquo s license. 108 minutes.
February 13: The Tuskegee Airmen: Tracks the experience of the first African-American fighter pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and their quest for respect and acceptance. 60 minutes.
February 20: Race: Describes track-and-field athlete Jesse Owens&rsquo path to gold-medal victory in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, despite Hitler&rsquo s promotion of Aryan supremacy. 135 minutes.
February 27: More Than a Month: African-American film director Shukree Tilghman crosses the country trying to get support for ending Black History Month as separate from American history. 60 minutes.
