Today in History in 1824 the U.S. House of Representatives began to decide the outcome of election deadlock between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson (Adams wins); and in 1878 the first telephone was installed in the White House.

  • 1750 - First school in America to offer manual training courses opens in Maryland

  • 1955 - Rosa Parks arrested for refusing to move to the back of bus and give her seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama
  • 1957 - Sam Cooke and Buddy Holly and Crickets debut on Ed Sullivan Show
  • 1982 - Michael Jackson releases his album "Thriller"
  • 1988 - Benazir Bhutto named 1st female Prime Minister of a Muslim country (Pakistan)
  • 2001 - Captain Bill Compton brings Trans World Airlines Flight 220, an MD-83, into St. Louis International Airport bringing to an end 76 years of TWA operations following TWA's purchase by American Airlines.
