Today in History in 1834 Sandpaper was patented by Isaac Fischer Jr, Springfield, Vermont; in 1938 Dorothy Lathrop won the first Caldecott Medal for children’s books; in 1946 Nat King Cole recorded "The Christmas Song" for the first time; and in 1953 Elvis Presley graduated from LC Humes High School in Memphis, Tennessee.
