Today in History in 1896 the first movie theater in the United States opened, charging 10 cents for admission; in 1977 Elvis Presley gave the last performance of his career in Indianapolis; and in 1997 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is published, the first instalment of the bestselling series by J. K. Rowling.

  • 363 - Roman Emperor Julian is killed during the retreat from the Sassanid Empire. General Jovian is proclaimed Emperor by the troops on the battlefield.
  • 1794 - Battle of Fleurus; major victory by forces of the First French Republic under General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan over the Coalition Army (Great Britain, Hanover, Dutch Republic, and Habsburgs) first use of reconnaissance balloon
  • 1797 - Charles Newbold patents 1st cast-iron plow. He can't sell it to farmers, though, they fear effects of iron on soil!
  • 1857 - The first 62 recipients are awarded the Victoria Cross for valour in the Crimean war by Queen Victoria
  • 1894 - Karl Benz of Germany receives US patent for gasoline-driven auto
  • 1896 - 1st movie theater in US opens, charging 10 cents for admission
  • 1900 - Dr Walter Reed begins research that beats Yellow Fever
  • 1917 - 1st US Expeditionary Force arrive in France during WW I
  • 1934 - FDR signs Federal Credit Union Act, establishing Credit Unions
