Today in History in 1776  The Continental Congress resolved "these United Colonies are and of right ought to be Free and Independent States;” in 1843 an alligator fell from the sky in Charleston, S.C. during a thunderstorm; and in 1937 American NASCAR Driver  Richard Petty (Daytona 500 - 1979 & 81) was born in Level Cross, N.C.
