The crisscrossing of ideas throughout history has led to wonderful combinations, amalgamations, and spontaneous growth of new foods, beliefs, and inventions. Once a combination of good ideas takes hold, a culture is never the same…and rightly so. People want to progress. They want to grow, to discover new things, and to become better tomorrow than they are today.
That happens by trespassing – nicely – through the boundaries of thought.
I’m not saying that we should tear apart foundational truths or ideas for the sole sake of change – that creates fruitlessness and frustration. What I’m trying to point out is that through the pages of history, no progress would have ever been made if everyone had always stayed where they were and never tried anything new.
When people have been willing and able to move forward in new directions, positive things have come from it. Like the candy commercial used to advertise, we wouldn’t have Reese’s Cups if somebody hadn’t thought of putting chocolate with peanut butter! And, man those are good…just sayin’.
Likewise, what thoughts do you have in your mind that you have entrenched so deeply that you would never be willing to consider lowering the boundary on? Are they completely separated from other ideas for a reason? Should they always stay that way?
Would it be possible to combine some of the ways you think about one thing with other ways that you view a different something else?
Random combinations could perhaps unlock questions you’ve had about something. For example, could you combine a clock and a bottle of water to solve a question you have? I don’t have anything specific in mind – it’s just a thought. What about combing a forgotten branch of philosophy with astronomy and chow mein to solve the puzzle of time travel?
Does that sound outlandish? Maybe… or maybe it’s the very kind of mental trespassing we need to allow ourselves to do, in order to find answers to some of life’s riddles we face today.
Something to think about. Have a great week!
