Little Girl's World

Judge Rembert
Guest Columnist

It was a nice big house...
It had a big big front porch...
The porch was all the way across...
Across the front and down the side...
It had bushes for privacy...
But there were no neighbors...
But people did drive by...

There were chairs and swings...
And one swing that hung on chains...
When it rained neighbor kids came...
Blankets and sheets were hung...
Hung on the furniture...
They made rooms and crawled...
Crawled around on the floor...
Sometimes it was a pretend house...
Sometimes it was cowboys' forts...

Life seemed so simple back then...
Children being children...
There were no TVs...
Lone Ranger was on the radio...
Very few had phones in their homes...
Some did not have running water...
But all the kids looked clean...
No one was hungry...
Everyone seemed happy...

Mothers ironed their children's clothes...
Children ran and rode bikes...
Children played baseball in the yard...
Children climbed trees...
Children dressed like children...
Children talked to each other...
Children knew how to pretend...

Children did not dress like grown ups...
There were no names on clothes...
Shoes were just Sunday, Play and School shoes...
Not some other person's name shoes...

Can you believe that was just one...
One lifetime ago...
Now this one lady is 71...
She was that child...
She played on dirt streets...
She saw the first interstate built...
Built in her state...

She used the first phone installed...
Installed in her little community...
Installed in her house...
People came and used it for a while...
She watched as everyone got a TV...
Her Uncle came from Chicago to visit...
He had a Cadillac and it had air conditioning...
Her house did not have air conditioning...
Only the Kress Store had air conditioning...

Now she has an iPhone...
She has a computer...
She has a blue tooth...
She has a GPS in her car...
She has a Hybrid Honda...
She can text...
She can fax...
She can copy...
She can print...
She has a flat screen color HD TV...

But she still remembers those kids...
She thinks about the fun they had...
She wonders if any of them are alive...
She is grateful that when she was little...
Little was different from being grown...
Seems like kids are born grown now...
They dress grown...
They have phones...
They sit and eat and do not see the people...
The people around them...
They talk to the people next to them on a phone.
Children have gained much...
BUT what have they LOST???...
