Love On People

Marty Reep, Author
Speaker, Forward-Thinker

Love on people.  Be innocent in your love.  Don’t expect much in return, but put it out there, and you’ll be happily amazed at the results.

A while back, I was out with my wife and adult son at a coffee shop.  After we had gotten our drinks and visited for a little while, it was time to head out.  As we were leaving, I noticed a young mother struggling to open the door.  She had her hands full.  She was holding her three-year-old daughter with one hand and had a cup of hot coffee in the other.  She was trying to use her foot to push the door open enough to squeeze through.

The little girl’s blonde ponytail bobbed around as she pulled this way and that, in and out of harmony with the bigger hand that was guiding her out the door.  Likewise, her tiny pink coat epitomized the energy and excitement she had about life.

I ran forward, caught the door, and held it open for the mother and her daughter.  My wife and son followed, with me bringing up the rear.  After we were all outside, I said, “We remember those days of struggling with kids and doors.”  The young mother grinned and said, “Thank you.  Have a good evening.”  “No problem.  You too,” I replied.

Just then, the little girl turned, looked at me, and smiled.  In her tiny voice, she said, “Thank you.  Have-good-e’ning,” and “smh!”  blew a kiss.  My heart melted.  I chuckled and leaned down toward her.  I said in reply, “You’re very welcome,” and “smh!” blew a kiss back to her.  Her mom laughed.  “How sweet,” she said of her daughter’s kindness.

Walking away, I chuckled at the beauty of the moment.  Such love and innocence from that little kid.  She’s so young that she probably won’t remember those actions as a singular event from her childhood.  But, it was such a heartwarming moment that it definitely made an impression on me.

Occasionally, I still have those conscious thoughts of love and innocence.  Many times, though, I get so caught up in things going on that I forget to live life with a simple joy of the moment.

Walking away, I thought, “Why wouldn’t I smile and blow a kiss to people?”; “Of course I should often say ‘thank you’ to others.”; and “Who doesn’t like the to receive the warmth of a hug, handshake, or kind greeting?”

In her tiny pink coat and blonde ponytail, she throws kisses to the world.  She’s an ambassador of goodwill and doesn’t even know it.  Or, maybe she does.

Love on people.  They will remember those moments for a long time.
