Ideas That Pursue You

Marty Reep, Author
Speaker, Forward-Thinker

Ever had an idea that’s pursued you for a long time? An invention? A puzzle? A quest?

If so, good! And, you’re not alone. True, everybody has ideas. But, not all ideas are ones that we come up with. Some seem to have a mind of their own, and will pursue you until you acknowledge their existence in some tangible or creative way.

Also, if a good idea has chosen to pursue you, then it’s probably not going to go away until you do something with it. You have been entrusted with its care. You have the responsibility to use in a good way – to harness its power and harvest its fruit. Think about the possibilities, and put that thing to use, somehow! Not only will you benefit yourself, you will benefit others around you, in the process.

The ideas that I’m asking you about aren’t necessarily ones that keep you up at night…although these could do that. They’re more the kind of ideas that make you ask yourself, “I wonder if it’s possible to…” Or, “How could we make a new kind of [----] by using a [-----] combined with some [---]?”

And then, while you’re doing something totally unrelated to that idea, part of a solution comes to mind. That’s when the fun begins! That’s when you can take the whole question or idea and start breaking it into tasks, steps, or parts that you can solve and define.

Roll forward a few weeks, months, or years…and another part of the solution shows up in your mind! Viola! You’re that much closer to a break through or tangible product.

On the other hand, there is value in working on an idea that may never yield a complete solution. Why? Because, sometimes, the effort you put in is worth more than the solution. Many ideas that you work on in your lifetime will allow you to acquire new skills and experiences that you would perhaps not gotten, otherwise. Likewise, working on ideas that pursue you will build assets, regardless of the ultimate success – and those are truly worth your time.

If you’re willing to put in the hard work, put your smarts to use in a concentrated effort, and learn a few things along the way, you can turn most ideas into successes – yes, even those ideas that have been pursuing you for years.

As with most things, you have a choice. You can let those “pursuing ideas” begin to plague you, or you can turn and face them…and begin to solve/harness them. Either way, you will expend energy on them. It will either be negatively-invested energy or positively-invested energy. The positively-invested kind will make you happier in the long run.

Cheers to the good ideas that have been pursuing you! I would love to hear about them sometime.
