Once A Year - All Year
Written October 10, 2021

Judge Rembert
Guest Columnist

What is tradition worth?...
How does it start?...
Who benefits from tradition?...
Good questions...

The 2nd Saturday in October...
This is the day...
The day family and friends gather...
Gather to celebrate...
Celebrate the old Church...
The Church no longer has a congregation...
No one meets on Sunday...
But it is active...

There is also clean up weekend in March...
People gather to clean...
Gather to share love and laughter...
Trim trees and clean...
The Church is old...
Many of the gathers are old...
Many have come for over 50 years...
Several have come every year...
In the Church cemetery people walk...

Walk and share stories about...
About the people buried there...
Often family members...
Young members are introduced to give stones...
Introduced to former Church members...
Introduced to deceased family member...
Connecting youth to their family history...

The eyes with tears and the laughter mixed...
This is a healthy way to build...
Build a child's mind...
Build laughter into loss...
Think about the good and the pain...
Often healing grows with laughter...
Also helps prepare youth for the loss...
Grandparents and parents grave stones...
Grave stones already in place...
Waiting for family member someday...

After the business meeting ends...
Tables and chairs are assembled outside...
Food begins to just show up...
Show up on the tables...
So much good food deposited...
No one would eat too much...
Well what is too much?...

Turkey, ham, chicken, etc., etc...
Southern vegetables of all kinds...
Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, fudge, brownies...
Well maybe overeating will take place...
You don't want to offend anyone...
Have to eat everybody's deposit...

As children age they join in the festivities...
They renew friendships for last year...
Families come from many states...
In time the relationships grow stronger...
Someday those youth will bring their children...
The tradition grows stronger...
The families and friends are blessed...
Blessed with this tradition...
It will last a year...
It may last a life time...

Hold on to your traditions...
If you do not have one...
Bless your family...
START YOUR OWN STADITION...

More About Judge Rembert: WWII made Judge an only child when her half-brother was killed in the war. She lived in a tiny town in South Carolina until she was eight and her Mother went to work. She was sent to a boarding school in Belmont, N.C. From that time on she has lived back and forth in the two Carolinas. They are both home. She was born dyslexic and did not know what the problem was or that it had a name until she was about 45. She was unable to spell so she never put words on paper until she was 65 and had a computer with spell check. She comes from a long line of story tellers and a Mother that taught her much by telling stories. Stories about people and how they faced life and how they dealt with problems. If you read what she writes you may hear her Mother and her Grandmother talking to her. She is thrilled to know that anyone reads her words and finds them interesting. Oh, she is 75 now and she now makes her home in Aiken, S.C. If you like Judge’s writings or would like to comment on them let her know by emailing judgerembert@bellsouth.net.
