Some people are naturally happy!  Others of us have to work on it.  You know who I’m talking about: those people who always seem to be smiling at whatever happens, or who never seem to have a care in the world.

My daughter is mostly in the first category (the naturally happy ones).  For instance, a couple of years ago, she was on a mission trip overseas.  One afternoon, I got a notice that she had posted more pictures online of her trip.  Opening the link, I burst out laughing.  There she was, riding an ostrich in the rain, laughing her head off!  That photo captured the epitome of pure joy.  Even though she had a rain poncho on, she was drenched.  The ostrich was drenched.  Yet, both of them seemed to be in their element.

Before she left for the trip, my daughter made a list of things she wanted to do while traveling.  I don’t seem to recall “ostrich riding” as one of the items on her rather lengthy list, but nonetheless, there she was…doing it.

As far as the ostrich was concerned, it looked quite well fed and content…content in not being chased by some leopard or hyena as their intended afternoon meal.  I could almost hear it thinking, “What?  I get to run around in circles making people laugh.  Works for me. …Where’s my food?  Where’s my food?”  At the same moment, I imagined my daughter thinking, “Never in a million years did I think I’d be doing this, today!  I love you, Mr. Ostrich.  …or are you a Miss?”

Point is, neither of them looked like they had a care in the world, at that moment.  You and I can do the same, right where we are, at almost any given moment in time.  We simply have to conscientiously have the thought and make the decision to.

Years ago, I worked with a lady who found out she had cancer.  For weeks, she went to the hospital for treatments.  For weeks, she got sick and threw up afterwards.  For weeks, she still smiled, every single day I saw her.  I finally walked in to her office and asked her how she did it, how she handled everything so well, and how she could smile day after day.  Her reply?  “I choose to.”

“I choose to” – what a concept!  It blew my mind.

“But how do you actually do it?” I asked.

“Every day, I when I wake up, I tell myself that since I woke up, I am going to make today the best I can.  Since I get to choose which attitude I’m going to have, my choice is to have a great one.  The result is a great day,” she answered.

I thought about that conversation for a long time.  After that, I started paying attention to how other people acted throughout their days.  I watched people’s reactions to things.  I watched their interactions with other people and with “stuff”.  My friend was right.  How a day turns out is largely determined by attitude.

Since we get to choose, then I choose to be more like my daughter and like my friend.  I choose more of “head over heels” happy and some “great” mixed together.

I hope that you’ll do the same!
