Calm Battle

Judge Rembert
Guest Columnist

Years ago she worked...
Worked in a large hospital...
She was a phlebotomist...
She knew that she...
She and her coworkers...
Always wanted to be sent...
Sent to 3-West...
3-West was the cancer wing...

Now they all knew that those patients were...
Were the hardest to draw...
But they were all very experienced...
They know their job...
If you ask why...

1 - Alps Mtn - Taking Care Of

Well the cancer patients were...
Were the nicest patients...
They understood the problems...
They never complained...
They just helped any way they could...

She remembered this experience...
Now she was taking a friend to...
To receive chemo...
She wondered as she went to the first...
First chemo treatment...
What would she see...
Would this be different...

Well the room was sectioned off...
4 patients to a square...
24 patients in a section...
1 Registered Nurse to a square...
But the nurses helped each other...
The system was well planned...
Super system...

Patients arrived quietly...
1 patient and 1 family member...
They seemed to know exactly how and
what to do...

There was fresh coffee...
In a break room for family...
There were drinks for the patients...
There was a quiet calmness...
The nurses were quick but calm...
Patients had warm blankets...
Everyone settled in for the 7 hour stay...

Blood was drawn...
Test came back normal...
Bags began to be hung...
No one seemed rushed...
Everyone, patients, nurses and family
all were pleasant...
The entire room remained pleasant...

Hours later she looked around...
Some were still there...
Some were finished...
But all had been pleasant...

Nurses had not sat down...
The 7 hours was about gone...
The room was clean...
The nurses were tired...
The patients were treated...

Her faith in hard work...
Hard work and good people
was renewed...
Some things do not change...
Cancer patients are fighting for their lives...
Cancer patients know that nurses are too...
Cancer patients know what is important...
Cancer patients know they are helping...
Helping the nurses fight for their recovery...

THEY ARE IN THE BATTLE TOGETHER

More About Judge Rembert: WWII made Judge an only child when her half-brother was killed in the war. She lived in a tiny town in South Carolina until she was eight and her Mother went to work. She was sent to a boarding school in Belmont, N.C. From that time on she has lived back and forth in the two Carolinas. They are both home. She was born dyslexic and did not know what the problem was or that it had a name until she was about 45. She was unable to spell so she never put words on paper until she was 65 and had a computer with spell check. She comes from a long line of story tellers and a Mother that taught her much by telling stories. Stories about people and how they faced life and how they dealt with problems. If you read what she writes you may hear her Mother and her Grandmother talking to her. She is thrilled to know that anyone reads her words and finds them interesting. Oh, she is 75 now and she now makes her home in Aiken, S.C. If you like Judge’s writings or would like to comment on them let her know by emailing judgerembert@bellsouth.net.
