She could see the changes...
Changes that were small but there...
Mama was developing Alzheimers...
Slowly Mama was becoming someone...
Someone new...

Day by day she changed...
One day daughter returned from work to find...
To find pictures of ladies siting on the sofa...
Now Mama liked wigs...
She had books of pictures of wigs...
These were some of the ladies pictures...
Mama had cut them out of the books...
They were watching TV with Mama...
Mama said, “Don't sit on the sofa.”...
“They like this show.”

1 - Jackie Dameron Farm Bureau

OK this was a big change...
Then there was a new fellow...
A Doctor who was cut from a newspaper...
He was Mama's new boyfriend...

Came home one day to find him on the sofa...
On the sofa taking a nap...
He was wrapped up with a throw…
“Don't sit on the Doctor please”...

Now she still knew who her family was...
She still cooked...
Daughter was not happy that she cooked but...
But how to you tell your Mother she can...
Cannot cook her lunch...
Sometimes Mama would cook at 3 a.m...

Well the daughter had to work...
She could not afford insurance if she quit...
Now this was a real problem…
Working was just an absolute...

Well one day Mama got far enough into...
Into her new world that the day was there...
She needed 24-hour care...
She still knew somethings but not much...

The day came to go to the Assisted Living Home...
Now what to do with the Doctor...
The Doctor and the ladies...
So here is how the problem got solved...

Daughter, “Mama you know this is very expensive...
We cannot afford to take the ladies or the Doctor”...
Mama was not happy...
“I will find them new homes”...
Daughter put the pictures in her car...
She left to go the Walmart...
When she returned Mama ask, “where are my
girls and the Doctor?”
“Well Mama I left them all in the car...
I left the windows down...
When I returned they were all gone...
They must have found people they liked...
They went with them.”
Mama was so happy...
They all found good homes...

These pictures were NEVER mentioned again...

Now folks you can drive yourself crazy...
You can drive the patient crazy...
But putting reason on a shelf helped...
Helped this woman and her Mother deal...
Deal with reality...

SOMETIMES REASON AND REALITY
DO NOT MIX WELL

More About Judge Rembert: WWII made Judge an only child when her half-brother was killed in the war. She lived in a tiny town in South Carolina until she was eight and her Mother went to work. She was sent to a boarding school in Belmont, N.C. From that time on she has lived back and forth in the two Carolinas. They are both home. She was born dyslexic and did not know what the problem was or that it had a name until she was about 45. She was unable to spell so she never put words on paper until she was 65 and had a computer with spell check. She comes from a long line of story tellers and a Mother that taught her much by telling stories. Stories about people and how they faced life and how they dealt with problems. If you read what she writes you may hear her Mother and her Grandmother talking to her. She is thrilled to know that anyone reads her words and finds them interesting. Oh, she is 75 now and she now makes her home in Aiken, S.C. If you like Judge’s writings or would like to comment on them let her know by emailing judgerembert@bellsouth.net.
