If you don’t believe me, think about your five closest friends, right now. Do you act like them? Do you have similar tastes, interests, and desires? Probably so.
If your goals and dreams are different than those of your friends, you can either try to change how your friends believe (very hard to do), or you can go associate with the kinds of people who will support, defend, and inspire your goals.
When you reach out to leaders and successful people in the areas of your goals, the universe will respond to your request and help connect you with the people you are looking for. But, you have to believe in yourself enough to take that risk, stick out your hand, smile, and say, “Hi. I’m [your name]. I’m going to become [your goal]. Since you’ve already done that, could I pick your brain a little?”
Most people in their position would be honored to help you on your journey. At some point, even the most successful people want to share what they’ve learned and want to pay it forward.
One of the great things is that once you’ve achieved your goals, you’ll be able to share your success with others who come to you and say, “Hi. I’m [their name]…” Kind of cool.
Next, dream big. Big dreams can help people more than small dreams can. There’s nothing wrong with having small dreams, it’s just that they won’t get you out of bed in the morning or keep you up late at night…but big dreams will!
When you dream so big that it scares you, then you’re dreaming at the right level. If you’re only dreaming at the level where you already know that you can accomplish something, then that’s not really a dream. That’s just an activity that is waiting on time for you to come do it.
On the other hand, a big dream is something that makes you stand up and look around. It makes you ponder the fabric of time and the essence of how people are interconnected. Big dreams make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. They give you goose bumps. And, they make you feel something powerful and great in your gut, again.
Finally, manage your time and your energy. Direct them toward your goals. If other interests are distracting you, then you have to make a decision: will those other interests take you closer to your goals or farther away? If they take you away from your objectives, then stop doing them. If they are helping you achieve your goals, then keep right on doing them.
You only have 24 hours in a day, just like I do…just like your friends do. Instead of trying to do everything yourself, think about how you can leverage your time. Leveraging your time may mean finding a partner to help you accomplish your goals. Maybe it means hiring people to help get things done.
Outsourcing the smaller things will free you up to think creatively and solve the bigger issues that need your attention. Direct your time and energy toward the people and things that will bring the best return for the time and effort you invest.
As you think about and work on these three areas (right people, big dreams, energy management), things will start happening. Things will start moving toward your goals.
