Surviving Or Succeeding?

Marty Reep, Author
Speaker, Forward-Thinker

Are you surviving, or are you succeeding? There is a difference.

One of our needs as people is to survive, but if we settle only for survival, we give up a lot. In agreeing to merely survive, we wind up living by someone else’s terms, instead of our own. Are there other options? Yes, of course! You can succeed. You can thrive. You can use obstacles as your staircase to living out your full potential.

Use the world for your purposes; don’t just let the world use you. In a perfect scenario, there would be a well-balanced exchange of give-and-take. But, we live in an imperfect scenario. Therefore, you have to set your own terms for your life, and then follow through on making them happen.

4 - Dona R. Berry - Brow Gal

As Michael Korda says, “Survival lies in the ability control one’s body and one’s mind.” We all have thoughts and ideas. Some of them are good, while some of them are better. What we choose to do with those thoughts or ideas determines a lot. It determines how we live today, how we’ll live tomorrow, and what we’ll do about it one way or the other.

Too many times, people get caught up in the lie that who they are as individuals is solely determined by a job title (that someone else probably gave them); by how much money is in their bank account; or by the people they associate with, day-in, day-out.

If you’ve realized that you’ve lulled yourself into mental sleep by thinking that way, then wake up! Know that you are far greater than that! If you’re frustrated with something, remember that you are meant for more. Don’t let a singular situation or thought define you for the rest of your life – work through it; forgive; and keep moving forward.

Depending on how it relates to your life, moving forward can refer physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, or with relationships. Think about those five areas of your life. Which one(s) are you only surviving in? Which one(s) are you succeeding in? Which one(s) are you somewhere in the middle?

You are meant to succeed! …and succeeding is far better than merely surviving. If you’re reading this, then that means you’re still alive. And, if you’re still alive, then there is still hope to change, hope to improve, hope to succeed, and hope to help others do likewise.

One of my teachers, Mrs. Mervine, taught me to think about life in the following ways. They have helped me (and others) to move from surviving to succeeding.

  1. Do each thing as if it were the only thing in the world that mattered, at that moment. (aka Focus)

  2. Never reveal all of yourself to everyone. (aka Talk less; do more)

  3. Think of time as your friend, and use it that way. (aka Perspective)

  4. Move smoothly through the waters of life. (aka Second and third order effects)

You can survive or you can succeed. It’s your choice. Either way, may you continue to grow and shine forth the brightness of hope, this week!
