Character - Building A Solid One

Marty Reep, Author
Speaker, Forward-Thinker

Character takes time to build, but is sometimes easy to destroy, if the choices you make later in life tear down the positive things you’ve built in yourself, during the previous years. However, the opposite is true, as well. Let’s say, for a moment, that some of your choices and actions earlier in life were less than honorable. If, over time, you have a change of heart and a change of mind, then it’s possible to reverse the negative character you’ve built and turn it into a positive one.

In part, the legacy you leave will be determined by your actions up to this point. It will also be determined and summed up by the actions you dedicate yourself to between now and when you draw your final breath. Meaning, there is still time to right any wrongs before you’re done. Likewise, you can multiply your impact by helping develop positive character in others by helping them to see – through your own examples – a better way to live.

Being as it may, we each have a limited amount of time on this rock we call home. Be it for a minute or for 100 years, each of us makes an impact on others. We each have the ability to leave an indelible mark that will last far longer than we think. Thus, each of us who are beyond the first few years of our lives are responsible for using the power and energy of making a positive difference to do just that – make a positive difference.

In doing so, we each make sure that the character we’re building in ourselves with worthwhile and worth the effort of every one of the 24-hour units that we have so used, consumed, and digested. The units of times behind us are behind us. No matter how hard we try, we cannot get those back, nor alter them in any way. Sure, we can update the memories of some of them by diluting them in certain ways. Otherwise, they are gone – thankfully, for some – sadly, for others.

However, what we each have control of is the ability to shape the invaluable commodity of Now. It is vital. It is essential. And, honestly, it’s the only legitimate unit of time that we actually have any direct influence over. The gift that Now gives us is the power we have in choosing how we use it. In choosing to use it for great things, we build up our character – which ties back into the longer run of time that we may, or may not, eventually get.

Time is of the essence, since none of us are guaranteed tomorrow or next week. That’s why it’s important to focus your character-building efforts, Now. By putting together a list of things you could do, then you’re more apt to make the seemingly impossible become possible, in tangible and meaningful ways.

Make the most of your Now, and live tremendously! Have a great week.
