Rain means a new beginning. Old is washed away and new shows up, again. The dirt from the past is rinsed away with each dropping of moisture that falls upon the surface. Clouds form, the heavens open, and life-giving water arrives once again. When you haven’t seen rain for a while, it’s a beautiful sight. On the other hand, too much rain can wash you away, along with the dirt it’s cleaning up.
As we’ve all learned, moderation is a good thing. Too little water from the skies makes a for a parched year in growing things in your garden or on your farm. Too much water will do the opposite.
Although you may have seen rain frequently over the past year, isn’t it still amazing? Really…think about it. Fresh water falls from the sky, gives life to plants and animals, maintains lakes and rivers, and soothes the soul.
Hearing millions of raindrops fall is an incredible sound…and each kind of roof on a house produces a distinct, recognizable sound. Rain on a tin roof make a louder, more hollow sound than an asphalt shingle roof. Both are beautiful, but both are different.
What kinds of sounds do you associate rain with? What kinds of experiences have you had with rain? Good ones? Bad ones? In between?
…and think about how rain feels. Sure, it’s wet (that’s part of what defines it as “rain”), but what else? How about the feeling of wet shoes, socks, and feet when you’ve been out in it? Most adults don’t like to go play in the rain, but kids do! And you probably did, too, when you were a kid! So, why not go splash around in those puddles, nearby? No, because you’re going to get a little wet (or a lotta wet)? You’ll dry out. So, will your socks and shoes. Mine do.
Seeing rain means seeing a physical miracle unfold before your eyes. Moisture that evaporated from somewhere else, at an earlier time, has now locked arms with other bits of moisture from even more other places, has condensed into droplets heavy even to feel the effects of gravity and get pulled back down to Earth. Amazing.
So, enjoy the next rain you get. I hope it’s just the right amount for you and yours.
