She Saw But Did Not See
Written June 18, 2022

Judge Rembert
Guest Columnist

She is 80 years old now...
She sits in her Grandparents chairs...
She owns the picture of her Grandmother...
Grandmother was 6-years-old in the picture...
Picture taken in 1900...
Picture has won ribbons at the State Fair...
She rocks in the chair and remembers...
Remembers the wonderful memories...
Memories made with those loved Grandparents...

Today she is old enough to know..
Know many things she was too young...
Too young to know what she was looking at...
Both Grandparents died before she was grown...
It was years before she could understand...
Understand what she saw as a child...

Grandparents lived in a small house...
10 acres in the country...
She remembers their garden...
She knows now it was not a hobby...
That is how they ate...
There was pretty furniture...
Brought from the previous life...
Life of work and good income...

Grandfather had heart problems...
She knew that...
But she did not know it destroyed their lives...
In 1940's when you could not work it...
It was hard times...
No income like 2022...
They had chickens...
She did not know how important those chickens...
Chickens were...
Eggs and meals...

They had a large 4-door car...
Little girls do not care about the year of a car...
She loved to ride on the front seat...
She was so happy to be going somewhere...
Usually to the A&P with her Grandfather...
She did not see the age of the car...
It was clean and it ran...
That was good enough for her...

She and her Mother lived in that house...
Lived with her Grandparents...
Her parents divorced...
Knows now it was a hard time for others...
But she was still a happy teen...

She remembers how excited everyone got...
Got when Uncle Jimmy gave them his old...
Old red station wagon...
She still did not see the truth...

It was years before she saw what she saw...
Saw years ago...
She had not lived long enough...
She had not experienced enough of life...

She still loves her wonderful memories...
They make her smile...
They make her happy...
But she is sorry she did not understand...
Understand how hard it was...
Was for her Grandparents…

God gifted her with these wonderful people...
She shared their world for 17 years...
She has hundreds of wonderful memories...
She has no memories of them complaining...
Her memories are of wonderful meals...
Great stories and much laughter...

Little girls need to make warm memories...
Old ladies need those warm memories later...

More About Judge Rembert: WWII made Judge an only child when her half-brother was killed in the war. She lived in a tiny town in South Carolina until she was eight and her Mother went to work. She was sent to a boarding school in Belmont, N.C. From that time on she has lived back and forth in the two Carolinas. They are both home. She was born dyslexic and did not know what the problem was or that it had a name until she was about 45. She was unable to spell so she never put words on paper until she was 65 and had a computer with spell check. She comes from a long line of story tellers and a Mother that taught her much by telling stories. Stories about people and how they faced life and how they dealt with problems. If you read what she writes you may hear her Mother and her Grandmother talking to her. She is thrilled to know that anyone reads her words and finds them interesting. Oh, she is 75 now and she now makes her home in Aiken, S.C. If you like Judge’s writings or would like to comment on them let her know by emailing judgerembert@bellsouth.net.
